Welcome to the Masjid al-Ansar historic preservation site. The East-West Foundation, Florida International University, and Masjid al-Ansar are working to develop the history of the first extant mosque in Florida with the help of Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Division of Historical Resources.

Historic preservation

Masjid al-Ansar, originally Muhammad’s Mosque #29, was established in 1960s by the Nation of Islam community in Overtown. The mosque’s current location was purchased in 1966. The building sits at NW 7th Avenue and NW 53rd Street in Miami and is recognized on the city’s historic register. It is the first extant mosque in Florida and was instrumental in the establishment of all subsequent mosques in Florida, including the Coalition of South Florida Muslim Organizations (COSMOS).

For more information on the history of the building, see the designation report by the City of Miami.
